Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Learning Objectives:
- Describe and recognize the
physical and functional consequences of prolonged illness, immobility and
bed rest.
- Know the methods for minimizing
long-term functional disability and impairment from acute and chronic
medical illness (e.g. pressure sores, contractures, deep venous
thrombosis, muscular deconditioning).
- Explain how to assess the
effects of impairment on a patient's daily function.
- Identify which rehabilitative
services (e.g. OT, PT, speech, post-acute inpatient Rehab, home services)
are appropriate for particular patient scenarios.
- List the indications for
prescribing home Personal Care Services.
- Understand and list the
physiologic and functional benefits of aerobic and resistive exercise
training.
- Know the indications and
benefits of basic assistive devices (e.g. upper and lower extremity
splints, canes, walkers, prostheses, wheelchairs, lift chairs).
- List the reasons for
recommending a home safety assessment and gait training.
- Formulate a rehabilitation plan
for a patient with functional impairment (e.g. CVA, arthritis, s/p hip
fracture repair).
- List indications and benefits
of cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation.
- Know the benefits of physical
therapy for musculoskeletal disorders.
- Demonstrate assessment of fall
risk in an elderly patient.
- Know how disability
determinations are made and describe the physician's role in the
disability process.
