Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe and recognize the physical and functional consequences of prolonged illness, immobility and bed rest.

  2. Know the methods for minimizing long-term functional disability and impairment from acute and chronic medical illness (e.g. pressure sores, contractures, deep venous thrombosis, muscular deconditioning).

  3. Explain how to assess the effects of impairment on a patient's daily function.

  4. Identify which rehabilitative services (e.g. OT, PT, speech, post-acute inpatient Rehab, home services) are appropriate for particular patient scenarios.

  5. List the indications for prescribing home Personal Care Services.

  6. Understand and list the physiologic and functional benefits of aerobic and resistive exercise training.

  7. Know the indications and benefits of basic assistive devices (e.g. upper and lower extremity splints, canes, walkers, prostheses, wheelchairs, lift chairs).

  8. List the reasons for recommending a home safety assessment and gait training.

  9. Formulate a rehabilitation plan for a patient with functional impairment (e.g. CVA, arthritis, s/p hip fracture repair).

  10. List indications and benefits of cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation.

  11. Know the benefits of physical therapy for musculoskeletal disorders.

  12. Demonstrate assessment of fall risk in an elderly patient.

  13. Know how disability determinations are made and describe the physician's role in the disability process.
