• First large RCT of combination therapy.

• 100 consecutive patients with HCV Ab; +HCV RNA; elevated ALT; +liver biopsy.

• Randomized to 2 groups:

1. IFN 3 MU TIW x 6 months

2. IFN + ribavirin 1000-1200mg daily x 6 months

• Follow up at 24 and 48 weeks after treatment.

• Primary endpoint was sustained virological response (SR); i.e. undetectable RNA levels.
