Desensitization
A prospective study with 13 patients with AIDS (CD4) with PCP and allergy to sulfonamides who failed alternative therapy (dapsone, pentamidine). The allergic reactions noted were a generalized, pruritic maculopapular rash, urticaria, angioedema, and pruritis. All patients had tolerated oral desensitization to cotrimazole without any adverse reaction including three patients who were critically ill and on mechanical ventilation. Total follow up ranged from 4 to 84 weeks.
