Scheduling Guidelines for 3 Year Medical Residents

Intern Year (Scheduled by ACM’s)

Six to seven inpatient wards

INOC (Intern Night on Call) 3-5 weeks during ward months (Gen Med and Subspecialites)

Two Intensive Care months (CCU and MICU)

Three outpatient months (may include research)

One Emergency Medicine (ED) month

 

Upper Level Years (Scheduled by Residents)

 

1)     Total Upper Level Ward Experience:  11 months

3  Intensive Care Months  (1-CCU, 1-MICU, 1-either)

1  Hem/Onc (Hem/Onc A, Hem/Onc B, or Leuks)

1  ACE Unit

2  Gen Med Wards (either 2 GenMeds or 1 GenMed & FMH)

2  Other Wards  (FMH, Gen Med, Renal, Hem/Onc A, Hem/Onc B, Cards, or Leuks)

2  ROC (Resident On Call) Months –one as HO 2, the other as HO 3

 

2)    Other Expected Upper Level Rotations:  7-9 Months

1  Academic Internal Medicine rotation (AIM)

1  Combined Rotation:  HOIII ED (2 weeks) / UIMA (2 weeks) (HOIII only)

1-2  Ambulatory Rotations:  DHP (HOIII Only); MACC-OPD (HOII/III); UIMA

5-6 Consult Months

 

3)   Subspeciality Exposure:

·         Categorical residents will complete a consultative rotation at WFUBMC in all five of the following subspecialties that are not adequately represented on the inpatient services: Endocrinology/Gastroenterology/Infectious Diseases /Pulmonary/Rheumatology.  These rotations provide both outpatient and inpatient consultation experiences.

  • Categorical residents will complete either a rotation in Renal consults or Renal Wards.

  • Hem/Onc and Cards outpatient are considered elective rotations for categorical residents. (Required for Primary Care)

  • Residents participating in the 2-month ambulatory block may apply to receive credit for a consult month in a subspecialty (usually Endo, Rheum or Allergy).  This decision will be made on a case by case basis after consultation with the Associate Program Director for Subspecialty Medicine and the relevant subspecialty consult block director.  Residents should inquire about this in advance.

    4)    Other Unstructured Elective Experience:  4-5 Months

  • Briefly review the curricular outlines of core competencies (on our homepage) that we expect of our graduating residents so that you can make an informed decision about where to best invest your elective months.

  • We are able to accommodate Ten 2-month Ambulatory Blocks for self-styled immersion in ambulatory skills.  Available months are July/Aug, Sept/Oct, Jan/Feb, Mar/Apr, May/June.

  • Subspecialty  (e.g. Hem/Onc, Geriatrics, Palliative Care)  Electives

  • Non-Internal Medicine Specialties (e.g. Derm, Ophtho, ENT, Sports Medicine)

  • Research Electives

  • Clinical and Basic Research: Tinsley Harrison Research Experience (2 contiguous months)

  • Community-Based Experiences & Other Self-Styled Electives based on the individual learner’s needs

  • EBM and Medical Systems/Systems Improvement
