Peter R. Lichstein, M.D.
Program Director, Internal Medicine Residency

It is a pleasure to introduce myself and to welcome your interest in the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Wake Forest University.  As Program Director, I am committed to providing our residents with a learning environment that is rigorous, stimulating, supportive and flexible. I enjoy working with each of our residents to identify and meet their unique educational needs and career goals. As a General Internist, my practice and teaching reflect core values in clinical excellence, patient-centered care and critical application of clinical reasoning at "the bedside". Whether in the clinic, lab or on the hospital wards, I stress to our residents that we must dedicate our efforts to relieving the suffering of those who are sick and promoting health for individuals and communities.

The program’s primary mission is to train effective clinicians instilled with habits of professionalism, leadership, critical thinking and life-long learning. These habits provide Wake Forest graduates with a solid foundation for successful careers in General or Subspecialty Internal Medicine.  A secondary program goal is to actively involve each resident in scholarship. Residents learn the principles of research by working along side our faculty. Through their research activities Wake Forest residents contribute meaningfully to our knowledge of disease, therapeutics and the process of clinical care.

Our program is distinguished by impressive traditions in Evidence-Based clinical practice, the highest standards of clinical care and a spirit of collegiality that permeates house staff and attending interactions. We achieve excellence through remarkably talented residents, a diverse patient population, committed attending physicians and progressive leadership. Wake Forest emphasizes core knowledge and skills in Internal Medicine while enthusiastically pursuing new innovations in graduate medical education as we anticipate how best to prepare our graduates for tomorrow’s practice of medicine.

Whether your goal is to practice General Internal Medicine or pursue subspecialty training, I believe our residency program is second to none.

Governing Values:

  • The overarching goal of our work is to relieve the suffering of those who are sick and promote health for individuals and communities

  • Residency training must respect the individual autonomy and unique educational needs of each resident and facilitate his or her professional development

  • Wake Forest cultivates an intellectually rigorous environment that stimulates a thoughtful approach to medical decision-making and critical assessment of the underlying evidence

  • High quality care results from the daily practice of professionalism, personal reflection, effective communication and the establishment of healing relationships

  • Residents at Wake Forest learn to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams and complex medical systems to provide care of the highest quality and safety
