(All directions start at the Hospital unless otherwise stated)

West End              

The West End is an older part of town that has several local restaurants and bars scattered amongst residential homes.  Fourth St. and Burke St. are the main locations.  From the hospital, take Hawthorne Rd. to First St., head E. on First St. a few blocks until the street splits.  Take Burke St. E.  Here you will find a handful of bars.  If you continue on Burke St. for one block and take a left onto Brookstown, you will immediately intersect 4th Street.  To your right, and more so to your left, are several local restaurants that serve great food at reasonable prices.  Check out The West End Café or the 4th Street Filling Station.

4th Street Arts District

Just East of the above, the Downtown Arts District centers around Fourth Street and Marshall Street.  This is the location of the Stevens Center, a performing arts center.  This area has a handful of restaurants and bars, and hosts live outdoor concerts every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night from May through October.  From the hospital, take Bus 40 E to Broad Street, then North on Broad and East on 4th St.  The area begins a few blocks east of Broad.

Wake Forest University and Reynolda Village    

Once again there is more than one way to reach these locations.  Take Bus 40 W to Silas Creek Parkway N.  Go N on Silas Creek to the Reynolda/Wake exit.  If you continue N, you will enter Wake Forest University.  If you turn right (E) onto Reynolda Rd., you will approach Reynolda Village ahead on your left.  The Village has several upscale shops and boutiques, a few restaurants, and a coffee bar.  Here you will also find the historic Reynolda House, built between 1912 and 1917, which now serves as the Reynolda House Museum of American Art.  Don’t miss the formal gardens on site as well.  For dining, I recommend The Village Tavern.  This restaurant is a Winston-Salem original.  While it’s newly built sibling located near Hanes Mall is larger, this locale provides more old tavern flair. 

Coliseum Area    

This is where the Wake Forest teams as well as the Winston-Salem Warthogs minor league baseball team play.  This area also boasts the fairgrounds and many local and chain restaurants and bars.  If you are already near the Wake Forest Campus, the easiest way to get to this area is to continue north on Silas Creek toward North Point BLVD, and continue to the intersection with University Parkway. Turn South on University PKWY, the coliseum area centers around the intersection of University and Deacon BLVD.  Alternatively, from the hospital, take Bus 40 E to the Cherry street exit, continue on the exit ramp to Cherry Street, and turn north.  Cherry becomes University PKWY, which will take you to the Deacon Blvd. intersection.

Old Salem                     

Old Salem is the site of the original Moravian settlement of this area.  It boasts many Eighteenth Century buildings which contain several shops run by people dressed in colonial attire.  This is a nice place for history buffs and parents alike.  From the Hospital, take Bus 40 E to High/Cherry/Marshall St. exit.  From the Exit ramp/service rd, turn right on Marshall Street and head south to Academy St.  Turn left on Academy and head east to Old Salem Rd and S. Main St intersections; this is near the heart of Old Salem.

Hanes Mall          

Do we have a mall?  How about one of the largest malls in North Carolina.  Hanes Mall is located at the corner of Hanes Mall Blvd. and Stratford Road.  There are lots of stores.  The best way to get there is to Take Bus 40 W to Silas Creek Pkwy S (E); Silas Creek intersects Hanes Mall Blvd. near the mall.  Alternatively, one could take Bus 40 W to Stratford Rd. S., to Hanes Mall Blvd.  This route will exhibit the many chain and local restaurants and businesses on Stratford Rd.  If you turn West on Hanes Mall Blvd., you will find that the chain stores continue through to the largest movie multiplex in town.
